Lily Collins is predominantly known as the star of Netflix’s acclaimed series “Emily in Paris.” Yet, in the realm of digital security, it has now become synonymous with a malicious hack that, within moments, can hack your Facebook profile.
Cyber attackers modify the victims’ profile images and names, impersonating the celebrated actress.
Nationwide teams from NBC Responds and Telemundo Responde have been alerted about this hacking trend, with countless viewers expressing the difficulties they encounter in reclaiming their accounts. Dawne Richards is one such victim.
For Dawne, Facebook isn’t merely a social networking site; it’s a sanctuary of invaluable memories. “It was a lifeline, making me feel connected,” she expressed.
While Facebook offers an Online Help Center, comprising articles, guidelines, and direct links, there isn’t a straightforward helpline to dial for support.
Eva Velasquez, from the Identity Resource Center, shares, “One should understand that these platforms don’t offer customer service in the traditional sense. Instead of being their customer, you’re the commodity.”

She points out the staggering rise in social media account hijackings in recent years, emphasizing that users’ sole recourse is through the respective platform.
A Meta spokesperson remarked, “We are acutely aware of the trauma of losing account access and are striving to enhance our user support. Despite our efforts, we need to tread cautiously. Making account access simpler can inadvertently empower malicious actors.”
Following protracted efforts and an intervention by the California State Attorney’s Office, Dawne finally retrieved her account, along with the cherished memories stored therein.
Cybersecurity professional Dmitry Bestuzhev cautions that a mere click on a malicious link can compromise your account.
“A single misguided click can instantly infect my computer, exposing personal data stored on my browser, irrespective of which one it is,” he warns.
For those leveraging platforms like Facebook for personal or business engagements, experts advise:
- Always maintain a backup of videos and business-related data.
- Employ robust passwords comprising a mix of 12 or more characters, symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Refrain from using identical passwords on multiple platforms.
- Activate login notifications and dual-factor authentication.
Remember, safety comes first when navigating the digital realm!
